The Slovak Republic is as an independent and sovereign state very young. On January 1, 1993 was split former Czechoslovakia and Slovak Republic came into being. Indeed it is an old country with rich historical heritage. Slovakia is a democratic country with market economy.
The Slovak Republic is located in Central Europe. In Northern and Central Slovakia the countryside is hilly, covered with the Carpathian mountain range. In the past there were two important trade routes that led across Slovakia, i.e. the Amber Route and the Czech Route bringing not only goods (gold, amber, furs) but also information that enabled the various ethnic groups and nations to get to know each other. Nowadays Slovakia is becoming a crossroads of economic and trade routes between the East and the West.
Substantial part of Slovakia is covered with mountains belonging to Western-Carpathian Row. Mountains create several parallel stripes, divided by valleys, where rivers (river Vah in the valley of Povazie, Hron in Pohronie) run. The outer stripe is created by lower mountains, covered with forests: Biele Karpaty, Javorniky, Nizke Beskydy. The inner part is created by lower Male Karpaty, Strazovske vrchy, Velka Fatra, Mala Fatra and higher parts of Nizke Tatry and Vysoke Tatry (Low and High Tatra) with highest peak of Carpathian Row - Gerlachovsky stit (2655 m). Three lowlands are located in the southern part of Slovakia: Zahorska (Borska) nizina and Podunajska nizina in the west and Vychodoslovenska nizina in the east. South-western border of the country is formed by Danube river. The climate is moderate.Slovak is situated in the mild climatic belt with regular alternation of the seasons of the year. The average temperature is 3.7oC to 10oC. On the other hand, the alpine region has snow for 130 days.
BRATISLAVA CASTLE was settled in the Neolithic and Roman periods. The oldest name of the castle comes from the year 907. In 1431 the original Roman castle was rebuilt, serving both as a Gothic residence of kings and a military fortress. A great fire in 1811 destroyed the castle palace. In 1953, the building underwent reconstruction and was rebuilt in Theressian style. Since 1962 the castle has been open to the public.
